Peer Mentoring | For Carers

The Carer Peer Mentor Program (PMP) pairs our Peer Mentors with people supporting a loved one in their recovery from an eating disorder in the community. The supportive relationship leans on the wisdom of the Mentor having been through this journey with a loved one, and who would now like to provide connection, support and hope for other carers. We know family members and carers play an incredibly significant role in supporting a loved one’s recovery journey, so our Peer Mentors provide opportunities to:

  • Increase your understanding about eating disorders
  • Learn new skills and strategies around communication
  • Manage your own emotions and expectations
  • Practice self-care during the potentially stressful experiences of a loved one’s recovery
  • Negotiate and accept of setbacks
  • Acknowledge and celebrate achievements

Peer Mentors:

Manage and develop the relationship
Encourage the other person
Nurture and contribute to the other person’s growth
Teach relevant skills
Offer mutual respect
Respond to the other person’s needs
*(based on an acronym by Clutterbuck, 2004)

Peer Mentoring for carers is open to any carer 18 years or over who has attended our Collaborative Carer Skills Workshop. We will also need you to complete an agreement that outlines your commitment to attend one-on-one sessions over a 3-month period (12 sessions).
