It’s unlikely that one single thing will lead to an eating disorder. There is often a combination of risk factors, including genetics, emotional factors and cultural influences.

Who gets eating disorders?

No matter your size, shape, age, abilities, gender identity, sexuality, cultural or linguistic background, economic status or location, anyone can experience an eating disorder.

Do you know someone at risk?

Approximately 9% of Australians will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime but it’s not possible to tell if a person has an eating disorder simply by their appearance.

Medicare items for eating disorders

Patients with a clinical diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and other eating disorders may be eligible for new Medicare rebates under the Eating Disorder Medicare Plan.

An innovative and engaging

eLearning program for Australian secondary schools coming in 2024

What is Body Kind Online Education?

With thanks to the e-Safety Commissioner, Butterfly is developing an e-learning program for Australian secondary schools which will include a program for Y7-8 and 9-10, a teacher training module and resources for parents/families addressing the topic of body image and the influence of social media.

The program will be mapped to Australian curriculum, NSW Education Standards and Western Australian curriculum and will be launching in mid-2024.

Body Image and the influence of social media
Social media literacy skills that nurture body image
Society driven appearance ideals, comparison and appearance/weight-based bullying
Social media industries and the tactics employed that impact body image
The importance of shaping authentic social media content and experiences to support a positive body image
The role of self-compassion and help-seeking
