2 August, 2017 – Butterfly Foundation, Australia’s leading national organisation for eating disorders, congratulates Lucy Brogden on her appointment as the new Chair of the National Mental Health Commission (NMHC) today.

The NMHC has been instrumental in advancing government, sector and community recognition of the needs of approximately 1 million Australians with an eating disorder. The Commission’s advocacy has been influential in contributing to the Government’s new level of recognition of treatment and support needed for eating disorders.

Butterfly Foundation CEO Christine Morgan welcomes the appointment of Lucy Brodgen as the new Chair of the Commission, recognising it as a new era of leadership for the Commission.

“Lucy Brogden’s appointment as Chair marks the next important chapter in Australia’s recognition and commitment to Australians living with mental ill health,” said Ms Morgan.

“We look forward to working closely with the Commission and the new Chair to take the necessary steps in providing consistent evidence-based treatment and support for everyone suffering from an eating disorder,” said Ms Morgan.

Since its inception in 2012, the National Mental Health Commission has played a pivotal role in advancing Australia’s commitment to a comprehensive mental health policy that drives systemic change and community acceptance.

Butterfly Foundation celebrates the achievements of outgoing Chair Professor Alan Fells, and thanks him for his tenacity and commitment to ensuring that the mental health of all Australians was increasingly recognised across all levels of the community.

“We are grateful to Professor Fells for his leadership of the Commission and for fostering an inclusive approach to Australians with a lived experience of mental health.”
